What is the NaturSoft™ resin?

The NaturSoft™ product offers a compelling solution to the problems associated with mineral hardness versus a salt based water softener. Its media granules feature a very high surface that is hydrophilic in nature. The surface is composed of a deliberately identical growth form, or growth habit of calcium carbonate crystals. Given the right conditions, these crystals draw dissolved minerals out of solution and use those building blocks to continue to grow in same pattern and direction unless environmental factors compel a change.

The scientific literature suggests that there are some 360 distinctive growth habits of calcium carbonate crystals that have been identified and described. Calcite, aragonite and vaterite are the most common forms. The different growth habits are believed to largely be the result of environmental factors like temperature, pressure, magnetic fields and contaminants which are ions other than calcium or carbonate that disrupt the previously established pattern. In absence of outside influences, a crystal will continue to grow according to the pattern established at the onset.

How does the NaturSoft™ resin soften my water?

The NaturSoft™ media is a catalyst with calcium carbonate crystals on its surface which grow at a rate determined by the saturation levels of calcium and magnesium carbonate in the water. As the crystals grow and extend further and further from the surface of the bead crystal fragments get broken off and are carried away by the water flow serving as seed crystals for further crystal formation downstream in the plumbing system. The NaturSoft™ media works as catalyst only, not as a filtration media. Therefore, the material is not sacrificial and does not require regeneration in order to function.

How is this different from a salt-based softener?

Traditional Salt-Based systems use a process of softening called Ion Exchange. The ion exchange resin beds are made up of tiny spherically shaped beads through which the raw water passes. The surface of these beads features sites bearing a negative electric charge. Based on the principle of opposites attracting, these sites are occupied by sodium (or potassium) ions in new or freshly regenerated resin. Sodium (or potassium) ions have a valence, or electrical charge of [+] plus one. In the softening process the raw water containing calcium and magnesium ions passes through a bed of these beads. Calcium and magnesium ions have a valence of [++] and are strongly attracted to the negatively charged areas of the resin bead. In effect, they "bump off" the sodium ions and take their place on the surface of the resin bead. As a result, the sodium is released into the softened water. Every calcium or magnesium ion is "exchanged" for two sodium ions. After a period of time, the resin will exhaust, i.e. all the available sodium has been exchanged for calcium and magnesium. In other words, the resin has lost its ability to remove further calcium and magnesium ions from the water; it needs to be regenerated in order to function again. During this process Sodium from the salt brine mixture (water and salt or potassium) from the softeners salt tank is drawn through the resin bed. The high concentration causes the resin beads to release the healthful minerals calcium and magnesium; they are discarded with the backwash water. The electrically charged sites on the resin are once again occupied by sodium ions, and the whole process starts all over again.

Why use a salt system and are you saying salt-based systems do not work?

Salt-Based systems do work. In fact salt-based ion exchange systems have been around for just over a century and is still the most widely used method of water softening. Indeed, for some types of contaminants like arsenic or nitrates ion exchange is one of the preferred methods of removing those from the water.

Why go salt free?

When people make the decision to buy equipment to deal with water hardness, they do so because they want to deal with the SYMPTOMS caused by hardness, i.e. scale, corrosion and housekeeping issues. Mineral hardness is a coin with two sides: the healthful nutrition that the minerals provide on one side, the problems that are the symptoms of hard water in a home on the other. Nobody buys a softener because they want the minerals removed; people buy them because removing the minerals is a way of eliminating the symptoms of hardness (Just like the guillotine is an effective way of getting rid of a headache). Natursoft offers an alternative: reducing or eliminating the symptoms of hardness while keeping the minerals in the water.

Some people are on sodium restricted diets and cannot have any level of sodium in their water. Another reason people will not go salt-based is their local city has banned salt-based systems. This is limited to a small number of cities in CA and TX but may expand.

The #1 reason to go salt-free is that it is environmentally friendly and it is far less maintenance. The NaturSoft™ system allows you to isolate the minerals in your water to help prevent scale from building up. The added benefits of this is that existing scale can now be removed, as the water is now more soluble. With the minerals isolated from the water, soaps will work better and you will see softer feeling water, just like a traditional system, without using salt. Now that you are not using salt you are saving money, going Green and saving you frustration down the road.

Why does the NaturSoft™ system not backwash like Salt-Based Systems?

Since NaturSoft™ is chemical free, no electronic head is needed. Backwashing is done with ion exchange systems because the resin can only treat a limited number of gallons of water before it is "exhausted" and ceases to work. The regeneration process involving backwash and a rinse with salt brine is necessary to have to softener continue to work.

The NaturSoft™ media works as catalyst. It does not require regeneration in order to work.

NaturSoft™ systems use an upflow design. This means water goes down a tube in the center and back up through the media. This allows us to use a simple in/out head. There is no electronic head to worry about it breaking down after 5-10 years and having to call a tech to replace it.

How do I know the system is working if the minerals are not removed?

NaturSoft™ creates crystals out of the excess dissolved minerals that would otherwise be causing scale deposits in the plumbing system.

The other method will be to observe heating equipment and appliances already covered with scale. After installing the NaturSoft™ System in a few days you can observe that the white scale starts to disappear step by step and then no new scale appears. Our customers observed their coffee machines and appliances start to clean up from years of scale build up. You immediately can use 50% less soap and get a better wash. Your hair feels cleaner and feels softer.

The NaturSoft™ Salt-Free Water Softener/Conditioner water will tend to sheet. If water is left to dry on any surface it will leave something behind, this is true with the Pelican™ System and Traditional Salt-Based Water Softeners. These spots will simply wipe off versus untreated water where more work and special products may have to be used. Those who are replacing a salt softener must be told that there will be fewer suds with The NaturSoft™ Salt-Free Water Softener/Conditioner. The sodium content of salt softened water causes more suds. This is particularly true with some of the biodegradable laundry detergents. You should not use more soap to get more suds. Clothes will get clean without the excess soap and suds and rinse out and dry easier. The same with your dishwasher - use the appliance properly and with less powdered detergent. The taste of the water will not be affected because there are no chemicals being added to the water (Sodium).

When showering, the NaturSoft™ Salt-Free Water Softener/Conditioner water rinses off quickly and cleanly leaving your skin feeling squeaky-clean (doesn’t feel like there is still soap left on your skin). The NaturSoft™ Salt-Free Water Softener/Conditioner makes the water easier to clean up, just like a traditional salt based water softener. A dishwasher still needs to be used properly, toilets need to be cleaned, and surfaces need to be wiped off. It is recommended that phosphate-free soaps be used. The NaturSoft™ Salt-Free Water Softener/Conditioner will prevent new scale and corrosion in pipes, and will de-scale existing pipes and fixtures. Older water heaters should be drained to remove scale and sediment after the initial installation. Water heaters will work more efficiently, and a savings on fuel and/or electricity will result. After de-scaling water heaters, they should be drained at least once a year. Water heater manufacturers recommend this procedure as preventive maintenance.
